Some managers are receptive to creative applications of data mining, and some are not.  The conversation is asymmetric, though, in that it is the manager who makes the final call.  My experience has been that managers and companies which understand and effectively employ these technologies have a competitive advantage over those who do not, but technicians cannot make this happen alone.
